The Canada Carbon Rebate made its final payment on April 22, 2025. There will be no carbon rebate payment in 2026. The federal fuel charge — the consumer carbon tax on gasoline, diesel, and home heating fuel — was eliminated on April 1, 2025, and the rebate ended with it. The Government of Canada’s official benefits calendar now lists the Canada Carbon Rebate as “Closed.”

Why the Rebate Ended

The Canada Carbon Rebate existed to return fuel charge revenue to the households that paid it. When the government eliminated the federal consumer fuel charge on April 1, 2025, the revenue stream that funded the rebate no longer existed. The rebate had no legal or program basis to continue.

The sequence of events:

  • April 1, 2025: Federal fuel charge eliminated on gasoline, diesel, and home heating fuels
  • April 22, 2025: Final Canada Carbon Rebate issued for the January–March 2025 quarter
  • May 2025 and beyond: No further payments; program closed

What the Carbon Rebate Paid When It Was Active

The Canada Carbon Rebate (formerly called the Climate Action Incentive Payment or CAIP) applied in provinces that used the federal pricing backstop instead of their own equivalent system. For the 2024–25 benefit year, the annual amounts per adult were:

ProvinceSingle adult (annual)Quarterly payment
Alberta$900$225
Saskatchewan$752$188
Manitoba$600$150
Ontario$560$140
New Brunswick$380$95
Nova Scotia$412$103
Prince Edward Island$440$110
Newfoundland and Labrador$596$149

A rural supplement of 20% applied in all provinces for eligible residents outside a Census Metropolitan Area. Families received additional amounts per child. These were the final amounts paid; no 2025–26 benefit year rates were set because the program was closed.

These figures are sourced from the Canada Revenue Agency on Canada.ca.

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit Is Not a Replacement

A common misconception is that the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB), which launched July 3, 2026, is a replacement for the carbon rebate. It is not.

The CGEB replaces the GST/HST credit — a separate program that has existed since 1991. The CGEB is paid quarterly to low- and middle-income Canadians regardless of carbon pricing, in amounts similar to (and slightly higher than) the old GST/HST credit. A single person can receive up to about $950 for 2026, including a one-time top-up paid June 5, 2026.
